FeatureCAM provides a free utility (EZ-UTLS) to send
and receive nc code between your computer and the
cnc machine. In some cases EZ-UTLS will not be
able to communicate with your machine. This is
a common issue and here we will show you how to use
'Hyperterminal' instead. Hyperterminal is a
Windows based communication software that will allow
you to send/receive files to your machine. It
provides a greater level of control and it is easier
to use than EZ-UTLS.
Follow these steps to set up your connection:
- Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories ->
Communications -> Hyperterminal (see below).

- Name your connection and assign an
icon to it. You will be able to have
several configurations (ideally one for each
machine in your shop). Click 'OK' after you're
done.

- In the next page you need to
select the COM port that you will use to connect
to the machine. After you selected the COM
port click on 'OK'.

- Enter the appropriate settings.
The settings you enter in this page need to
match the setting of your machine. You
should be able to obtain these settings by
looking in your machine control, user manual or
by calling the machine manufacturer. If your
settings are not correct you won't be able to
send/receive files. After you entered
the settings click 'OK'.

- After that click on File ->
Properties. Now open the 'settings' tab
and click on ASCII setup. Follow the pictures
below.

- You are all set. Now click
on 'Transfer' and select either 'Capture text'
(to receive files) or 'Send text file' (to send
files to the machine). You will be able to
browse for .txt files only. When you send files
to the machine you should see the text scrolling
on the window. Your CNC machine should be
ready to receive code before you actually send
it from the computer.

- When you close Hyperterminal,
Windows will prompt you if you want to save the
connection you just created. Click on
'Yes'. Next time you want to transfer
something to your CNC machine you can open this
configuration and send files to the machine.
